Location

Wildwood Journeys run the courses in woodlands which are part of an extensive track of semi-ancient woodland running through two hidden valleys in an area of deepest Devon rich in bio-diversity and teeming with life. The camp itself is secluded in a transitional area not too far from the forest edge as this is where the greatest diversity in plant and animal species occur. There is also a beautiful lush stream with plunge pools in the shade of alder trees. The wildwood is home to deer, fox, owls and sparrow hawks which work it by day. At dusk you can sit by the badgers’ sett and watch them emerge for their nocturnal travels.

The Woodland

Robin Mulder

Robin has a background in designing and building wildlife gardens as a landscaper, as well as working as a wildlife garden consultant for Envision, an organisation taking sustainability and environmental issues into schools. Several years ago he won the ‘Prince of Wales Organic Gardener of the Year’ award for his work in this field. He has spent years working on organic smallholdings, farms and communities in Ireland, South Africa and Canada, learning the ways of nature in various habitats.

In moving to Devon Robin became involved with Landmatters Cooperative,  and has been part of the process of setting up a permaculture holding and creating a self sufficient low impact community on the land. Landmatters aims are to demonstrate a model of sustainable land management and agriculture for the 21st century, reducing the ecological footprint of those living on the earth, being an educational resource to the wider community, whilst managing the land to the highest environmental standards.

All the courses are held in the woodland managed by the now thriving community, whose community members live in benders – temporary structures built from local hazel coppice. They grow much of their own food, look after their animals, and are entirely off the grid for all their energy and water needs, using solar panels and wind turbines to harvest the energy of the elements.

Robin has been trained with Trackways  in bushcraft, survival skills and nature awareness, where he learnt the teachings passed down to Tom Brown Jnr and to Thomas Schorr-kon. He completed the year long course as well as several shorter courses and is currently planning a four month solo expedition in Canada, venturing into the wilderness to test his skills.
Robin’s teaching therefore grows out of a passion and commitment which he practices in his everyday life, to live in a mutually sustaining way on the earth of which we are guardians.

  Working with a group

He loves teaching and has an intimate and extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the woods in which he lives in such close daily contact. He is skilled at creating a safe space in which to learn, expand and connect more deeply with your self in nature, and brings his passion and lightness of touch to this work. He believes wholeheartedly in this work, bringing people into a deeper connection with the natural world and in the importance of this to the healthy future of our planet and ourselves.
